The book topicalises and discusses these insights and should be considered a contribution to a more varied understanding of some of the artistic issues that several of the creators of the 20th century's great international furniture successes were preoccupied by.
Danish furniture design represents a culture that predominantly exists in silent knowledge, and via an analysis of select chair examples from Denmark and abroad, the chair is considered from a tectonic angle.
A design typology is introduced, in which a number of chairs are divided into the following types: spindleback, shell and frame, and different joining methods are discussed.
Emphasis is placed on the architectural approach, in which knowledge of form, structure, material and technique contributes to establishing a discussion about the inner issues of the chair.
Chairs' Tectonics is written by Nicolai de Gier, Associate Professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, and Stine Liv Buur, PhD student at the same institution, and it aims to make some of the concepts and insights that are essential to modern furniture art come alive in an accessible format.
