《緬彝語音韻學》討論的是我國古西羌南遷居民及其後裔的語言。作者認為古西羌南遷居民及其後裔的語言是從原始藏緬語分齣的一個支派，經過羌戎語和羌緬語兩個曆史階段，分齣瞭緬彝語這一聲調祖語。調類特徵體現瞭緬彝語諸語言的親緣關係，可以此與非本語支語言劃界，具有語言譜係分類學上的意義。《緬彝語音韻學》構擬瞭古有110個聲類、71個韻類，《緬彝語音韻學》構擬的古音字匯含1500多個單字（包括同義字），為建構緬彝語聲類、韻類和調類提供瞭一個新的方案。
