這本小冊子是開創性的工作，因為此前對於中國共産黨政治話語的研究並未進入視野。文章也從幾個方麵，如政治術語的禁止和使用，領導人講話，宣傳部如何管製報紙和學術生産的限製等幾個方麵對話語控製進行瞭闡釋。缺點是，文章並沒有更多從話語與權力，話語與意識形態的關係角度來進行更為深入的分析，而使文章更多呈現為一種曆史研究的路徑，而非政治研究路徑。另外，本書雖然齣版於1992年，但其研究對象還主要為1978年之前的中國，對於1978年之後的巨大轉嚮關注不夠。
