《野性的呼喚(插圖本)》講述瞭一隻名叫巴剋的狗的故事。巴剋經過文明的教化，一直生活在美國加州一個溫暖的山榖裏，後被賣到北部寒冷偏遠、盛産黃金的阿拉斯加，成瞭一隻拉雪橇的狗。它目睹瞭人與人、狗與狗、強者與弱者之間的冷酷無情和生死爭鬥，於是為瞭生存，它學會瞭隻求活命、不顧道義的處世原則，變得凶悍、機智而狡詐。最後，在森林中狼群的呼喚下，巴剋狼性復萌，逃入叢林，重歸荒野。在小說中，作者將充滿冒險和野性的淘金生活以及在這種特殊環境中“優勝劣汰、適者生存”的客觀現實錶現得淋灕盡緻。
