Emerging against the backdrop of racially riven early-twentieth-century Hawaii, Apana's bravado inspired mystery writer Earl Derr Biggers to write six best-selling novels. The resulting Hollywood character was not a stereotypical "Chinaman" but a wisecracking sleuth with a knack for turning oriental wisdom into soup-alley Chinatown blues. Examining Chan in fact and fiction, Huang follows this untold story from the beaches of Waikiki to the studios of Hollywood.

著者簡介

黃運特，著名學者、書評人、詩人、譯者。祖籍浙江溫州，1991年畢業於北京大學英語係，同年赴美留學。1999年獲得紐約州立大學英文博士學位後，被聘為哈佛大學英文係助理教授。現任加州大學聖巴巴拉分校英文係教授。英文著作包括《跨太平洋位移》（Transpacific Displacement）、《跨太平洋想象》（Transpacific Imaginations）、《陳查理傳奇》（Charlie Chan: The Untold Story of the Honorable Detective and His Rendezvous with American History）等，並在《紐約時報》、《芝加哥論壇報》等刊物發錶文章。2014年榮獲美國學術界聲譽最高的古根海姆奬。
