The meaning of life is hidden in a small silver box. After Maebh explains that to her eighteen-year-old granddaughter Clodagh, the story begins. Graduating in two weeks, the world could be full of possibilities, but Clodagh feels her future is like a book written by someone else. Born with a rare disease, which has left her hand paralyzed, she feels helpless to achieve her dream of becoming a pianist. Her stern father, wanting to protect his daughter, has set her life in motion: she is to attend engineering school and marry a boy she doesn't love. Clodagh gets one chance at an adventure, a road trip set in motion by the grace of her grandmother, a mythical dressmaker. Maebh explains that she will meet a traveler in Arizona to help her on the journey; however, there is no map to the destination. Apprehensive and scared, Clodagh must trust her heart as her compass, as she searches for the silver box. Along the path, she meets many musicians, mystical figures that help her realize her dream of becoming a pianist. She learns that signs guide her and that the purpose of life is her choice. The Fabric, a modern-day fable, showcases how things are meant to be and that there are no coincidences.
