Pc David Temple's chance encounter with nurse Ursula Willis overwhelms him and she becomes his Tuesday treat, introducing sexual techniques he'd only fantasised about. When she deliberately becomes pregnant after a birthday romp on the bramble patch in the woods, he leaves his wife and marries her. Ignorant of her many liaisons and because of her expensive tastes, his workload causes a breakdown. Though he recovers, despite her attempts to keep him compliant with drugs, he's found hanging from a tree. It's assumed to be suicide but his faithful friend Ellie sets out to prove otherwise.
