怎麼看都會想到唐頓莊園，石黑一雄已經幾乎脫離瞭日本人的敘事習氣，感謝Dr. Mark Buck。

第一次看日本人拿英文寫的小說。讀完我還是不明白為什麼一個在外人看來極其無聊的職業和主人公半輩子毫無大起大落的年月竟然能被寫得這麼耐人尋味。語言非常優雅，敘事上很有日本人的剋製（或是一個管傢職業性的剋製？），常常是點到為止，知道重要的事就在幕後卻不將幕帷拉開。很妙。
