This book seeks to provide answers to everything you ever wanted to know about the law - except what the rules are or ought to be. For centuries, the law has been considered a neutral, objective arena that sets societal standards and in which conflicting forces resolve disputes. Author of American Lawyers and, most recently, Politics by Other Means: Law in the Struggle Against Apartheid, 1980-1994, Richard L. Abel is Professor of Law at the University of California, Los Angeles. A past president of the Law and Society Association, he has also edited The Law and Society Review.
