A "secret" painter, Camillo Campana's work can only now, after the painter's death, be fully understood. His figurative paintings from the 1950s are full of visionary dramatic force, with a striking monumentality that carries through most of his oeuvre, articulated first in broad, soft ground paintings and, later, in convulsive rhythms.
