On March 29, 2001, Ryan was named head coach at the University of Wisconsin. It didn't take long for him to make his mark with the UW basketball program. Since then, Ryan has raised the bar to unprecedented heights, including the program's first ever No. 1 national ranking in 2006-07 and a school record 31 victories in 2007-08.
