可以當作伊朗近代史入門來讀。成書於九十年代，作者作為一個曆史學傢並沒有展開伊朗伊斯蘭革命的分析。什葉派對殉難，順從強權和違抗強權上因為曆史原因而存在的不可化解的矛盾（鬍賽因之死）作者花瞭很多時間講述什葉派的神學邏輯上導緻的伊朗不可避免的陷入兩難。20世紀後葉的中東國傢都不可避免的陷入瞭世俗化的泛阿拉伯主義還有此失敗後而興起的泛伊斯蘭主義。伊朗都是其中的異類（波斯人和遜尼派）伊朗在身份上的特立獨行或許注定瞭它在政治上的獨一無二。本書裏避免討論瞭霍梅尼和他的“守護者”邏輯。但是伊朗革命又不得不提霍梅尼。我覺得這成瞭唯一的缺憾。雖然霍梅尼獲得瞭革命的成功，但霍梅尼的理論並沒有被所有的遜尼阿亞托拉所認可，伊朗的政權依舊是個實驗
