Is knowledge on societies like the USSR objective? Relative? Intersubjective? The authors argue that the USSR is best understood from several points of view. Publics and elites, US and Soviet, viewed the USSR very differently, in structured ways which also made a difference for policy. Understanding how differently they viewed our major superpower rival yields important lessons about ourselves.
