玛格丽特·阿特伍德（Margaret Atwood）于1939年11月18日出生加拿大首都渥太华，在家排行老二，有一兄，一妹。父亲是森林植物学家，母亲毕业于多伦多大学，主修家政。阿特伍德七岁时，全家移居多伦多，父亲则任教多伦多大学。

阿特伍德就读于里赛高中时即展露文才，在校刊发表散文及诗作，之后就读多伦多大学的维多利亚学院，师事诺若普·佛莱等教授。毕业时荣获伍卓·威尔森（Woodrow Wilson）奖学金，继续在哈佛大学攻读维多利亚时期英国文学，师承杰隆·巴克利，二十三岁获硕士学位，随即留在哈佛攻读博士课程。1966年自从她的第二本诗集《圈戏》出版后，阿特伍德在加拿大文学界就声名大噪。目前阿特伍德与小说家格姆·吉伯森及女儿洁思定居多伦多市。
