作者父親的一個好朋友是第四裝甲師的一名謝爾曼炮手，和他聊過許多在法國和歐洲發生的坦剋戰鬥。他在擔任謝爾曼炮手時最可怕的一場戰鬥是法國的一場夜戰，幾輛坦剋被睏在一個小村莊裏，不過和《狂怒》裏發生得不太一樣。他們在沒有步兵保護的情況下被德軍步兵包圍。他說最恐怖的事情就是聽到德軍步兵們叫嚷著爬上坦剋試圖用刺刀打開艙門。在《狂怒》中的一個小錯誤就是謝爾曼坦剋是有艙門鎖的，可以用閂鎖鎖住艙門。德軍步兵沒有鐵拳，就打算用刺刀撬開艙門，這時候排裏有個人說“用.30口徑互相射擊”。然後用航嚮機槍和同軸機槍互相射擊後基本上乾掉瞭所有的德軍步兵。
