Fought in the fall of 1777, this was the first major battle won by Americans and was a turning point in how the people of the colonies viewed the struggle for independence. The Continental army used techniques they learned from Native Americans to defeat the powerful British army. General Burgoyne, the British commander, was recalled to England in disgrace and was never given another important command.
