A tale of love and family troubles set in London, 1899 - Gertrude Melrose is attractive, intelligent, with a loving family; her only concern is for her brother Edward, who seems intent on squandering his inheritance at the gaming-tables. Gertie hopes that with the support of Edwards old friend, David, he can be made to mend his ways. But life gets much worse before it can get any better as the familys prosperity is destroyed.
