In the summer of 1952, three boys from Torrance, California, become friends. Their families live in cheap box houses without electricity or hot running water. The boys try their best to make an honest dollar, by shining shoes, delivering newspapers, or working on a farm. For fun, they go catfishing, swimming, and hunting at Dead Manas Slough.
