In flight from a disastrous marriage, Helen Huntingdon retreats to the half-ruined moorland mansion, Wildfell Hall, with her small son, Arthur. Here she adopts an assumed name and makes her living as a painter, far from the influence of her degenerate husband. Although the house is isolated and she seeks to avoid the attentions of then neighboring families, all too soon she becomes an object of cruel gossip.
