In The Spirit of the West, Charles Seymour tells the story of a young man named Joshua who goes west after the Civil War to make a new life in the Colorado Territory. In addition to finding gold on his land and all the adventure a young man could hope for, Josh finds his greatest treasure and adventure in the person of a young woman named Elizabeth Grant. Through a series of close calls and life saving events, Josh and Elizabeth meet, and it is love at first sight. They marry soon after Josh recovers from a near fatal accident in which his life is mysteriously saved by a blue-eyed wolf. Returning home from their honeymoon, Josh and Elizabeth find their cabin burned to the ground by renegade Indians. The explosive situation brings in the Army, and finally ends with all of the tribes forced onto the reservation.
