居斯達夫·福樓拜是19世紀中葉法國重要的批判現實主義作傢，1821年12月17日齣生在魯昂一個著名的外科醫生傢庭。其作品反映瞭1848－1871年間法國的時代風貌，揭露瞭醜惡鄙俗的資産階級社會。

1840年福樓拜赴巴黎攻讀法律，因患神經係統的疾病於1843年鞦輟學。在巴黎，他結識瞭另一位大文豪雨果。1846年他認識瞭女詩人路易絲·高萊，兩人有將近十年的交往。1846年父親去世後，他在魯昂附近的剋羅瓦塞彆墅定居，埋頭於文學創作，除偶爾到巴黎拜會一下文藝界的朋友外，在那裏獨身終其一生。

19世紀五、六十年代，他完成瞭三部主要作品：《包法利夫人》、《薩朗波》和《情感教育》，轟動瞭當時的法國文壇。
