Cajun culture is rich in oral tradition. When the French settlers made their homes in south Louisiana, they also incorporated bits and pieces of other cultures, including Spanish, German, and African. The Cajuns' African neighbors also had a rich oral tradition. Predictably, they developed stories together that have become part of Cajun folklore. Many stories center around the adventures and misadventures of Lapin, a rabbit, and Bouki, a coyote or wolf, who is Lapin's slow-witted compere, or "friend". In French, Lapin means "rabbit", while Bouki is African for "hyena". Collected here are six of the best tales for five- to eight-year-olds featuring the mischievous duo and their friends.
