索尔·贝娄的作品有许多都类似于流浪体小说，至少其中期作品占主要内容，此书中的亨德森即是如此，他都流浪到非洲原始部队去了，但与传统的流浪体小说不同在于，贝娄笔下的流浪者不是用自己的眼睛去观察社会，揭露现实，思考问题。亨德森则是寻找自我，算是自我的心灵流浪之旅...
