Max Frisch wurde am 15. Mai 1911 in Zürich geboren und starb am 4. April 1991 an den Folgen eines Krebsleidens in seiner Wohnung in Zürich. 1930 begann er sein Germanistik-Studium an der Universität Zürich, das er jedoch 1933 nach dem Tod seines Vaters (1932) aus finanziellen Gründen abbrechen musste. Er arbeitete als Korrespondent für die Neue Zürcher Zeitung.

Seine erste Buchveröffentlichung Jürg Reinhart. Eine sommerliche Schicksalsfahrt erschien 1934 in der Deutschen Verlags-Anstalt Stuttgart. 1950 erscheint Das Tagebuch 1946-1949 als erstes Werk Frischs im neugegründeten Suhrkamp Verlag. Zahlreiche weitere Publikationen folgten.
