A fresh, imaginative debut novel about a young police officer in northern California struggling to keep the peace—and maintain a grip on reality—in a town where the dead outnumber the living.
Doug Dorst’s first novel, Alive in Necropolis, was published this summer by Riverhead Books and was named as a Best Book of July by Amazon.com and an Editor's Choice by the New York Times Book Review. His first short story collection, The Surf Guru, will be released in 2009, also by Riverhead.
A former Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford University and a graduate of the Iowa Writers’ Workshop, he has also received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the James Michener/Copernicus Society and the MacDowell Colony.
His short fiction has appeared in McSweeney’s #9 and #11, Ploughshares, StoryQuarterly, The Atlantic Unbound, ZYZZYVA, Epoch, Five Points, and elsewhere.
His first full-length play, Monster in the Dark (a collaboration with foolsFURY Theater Company), was produced in San Francisco and Berkeley in early 2008.
He holds a B.A. from Stanford and a J.D. from UC-Berkeley, and he has taught at Stanford, California College of the Arts, and St. Edward’s University in Austin, Texas, where he is currently an assistant professor of creative writing. A three-time Jeopardy! champion, he lives in Austin with his wife and a few critters.
