Despite the small numbers of Lithuanians immigrating to the west in the twentieth century, Lithuanians have managed to start a community in every region of Michigan and have come to work in and make an economic impact on all of Michigan's major industries. Lithuanians in Michigan explores the history of Lithuanian immigration and the preservation of Lithuanian identity against the pressure of assimilation. Historically and today, the cultural activities of Lithuanian communities are centered at the parish, which serves to reinforce a sense of unity for Lithuanians. Michigan's central location among Lithuanian colonies has led it to play an important role in and to make a considerable impact on the North American Lithuanian community and Lithuania since the 1870s.
