John Reed was a radical American labor journalist and a revolutionary socialist, best known for his eyewitness account of the Russian Revolution of 1917, Ten Days That Shook the World . In 1919, Reed helped to found the US communist movement. His life is told in the 1981 Academy Award–winning film Reds , starring Warren Beatty and Diane Keaton. Reed also chronicled many other flashpoints of the workers’ struggle, and the best of his journalism is collected in this new edition of his writings, edited by historian and activist Mike Davis. Mike Davis is the author of many books, including City of Quartz and Planet of Slums . He teaches in the Department of History at the University of California at Irvine, and lives in San Diego.
