The establishment of South Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission was a pioneering international event. 德斯濛德•圖圖（Desmond Tutu，1931— ）1986年當選聖公會開普敦大主教（南非聖公會最負盛名的職位，是南非首位黑人大主教），1995年領導“真相與和解委員會”促成南非的轉型正義與種族間的和解。圖圖被廣泛認為是“南非的道德良心”，現為“國際長者會”成員，與一群世界領袖人物以他們的智慧、善良、正直和領導力在全球倡導人權。

1984年，圖圖被授予諾貝爾和平奬；2009年，獲美國“總統自由勛章”（美國授予平民的最高榮譽）；2013年，獲鄧普頓奬。
