诺森布里亚（Northumbria）的国王埃德温（Edwin）就基督教信仰的接纳问题进行冥想，并同他的朋友和顾问们讨论的故事。 他的一个大臣痛陈了我们对于自身终极命运的无知之苦：他将命运比作一只麻雀，从一端飞进一个明亮的厅堂，后又从另一端飞出。在堂内，这只麻雀处于庇护之下，远离堂外冰冷的暴风雨，但很快它就会消失不见，“再一次进入周而复始的寒冬。所以人类的此生仅仅存在一小会儿，”他宣称，“然而我们对于接下来或在此之前发生的是什么却一无所知。” 我们都会死，这谁都知道。但对于等在我们死亡之后的事情，我们就和埃德温的大臣一样全然无知。即便如此，从古希腊和希伯来时期起，就存在着一段人们关于来世的想象史，漫长而丰富，既有关于我们个人死后的，也有关于历史终结之后的。
