This book is based on the Proceedings of the Asia Forum in Ishikawa held in Kanazawa City, Japan, 22-24 August, 1994. The understanding of tourism is crucially important first, because it will become the largest global industry in the 21st century, and second, because of its impact on culture in an age of increasing globalisation. Many of the authors argue that tourist attractions can make a major contribution both to local economies and national development and "tourist culture" can be manipulated creatively by the local people in tourist destinations to their own purposes.
