This is the latest title in this popular series. Richly illustrated, the clean, modern design, concise introductory text and short entries create a delightful and accessible book. This title includes early works by Monet and Pissarro, as well as the Barbizon School - Corot, Rousseau and Millet - artists who were a key influence on the Impressionists. This is the latest in a series of popular new guides to the National Gallery's permanent collection, following the success of Manet to Picasso, and Dutch Painting. By the late eighteenth century, the practice of painting in the open air (plein-air) was widespread, with Italy the undisputed center. Artists of all nationalities congregated in Rome, from where they set out for the Campagna and other picturesque locations. As the nineteenth century progressed, artists throughout Europe grew more interested in depicting their own native landscapes. In France, the Barbizon group - Corot, Rousseau, Millet and Daubigny - were eager to escape the studio, and to treat the local landscape and its people in a contemporary, realistic manner. These painters were a crucial influence on a new generation of artists who would eventually become known as the Impressionists. Free exhibition of French nineteenth-century paintings at the National Gallery, London (July - September 2009).
