Federica Muzzarelli, graduated in History of Contemporary Art with a tesis titled “ The Conceptual in Italian Art in the Sixties and in the Seventies”, is since 2006 a researcher of Department of Visual Art. She theaches “Photography and Visual Arts” at the University of Bologna where she also teaches “Visual Arts and Fashion Imaginery” at the Master in “Collection Product Manager”.

Her main research's focuses are on:

- the photographic origins in the social and artistic context of the XIX century especially for what is concerning the automatic aspects as aesthetic meanings.

- the role and identity of the women photographic experiences between XIX and XX century as an anticipation of bodyartistic practices and performance.

- the historical and theoric aspects of fashion photography in relation with the contemporary visual culture.

Cosa hanno in comune il dagherrotipo e la polaroid, gli Alinari e i coniugi Becher, Marcel Duchamp e Cesare Lombroso, la Contessa di Castiglione e Luigi Ontani? Da queste domande è nata la curiosità di rileggere le vicende della fotografia ottocentesca con uno sguardo a ciò che l’arte avrebbe poi sperimentato a partire dal XX secolo, quando le Avanguardie Storiche sarebbero giunte a sconvolgere inesorabilmente il panorama delle arti visive.

Potremmo scoprire allora che già nell’Ottocento c’era chi aveva attribuito istintivamente alla fotografia il valore di certificazione del sogno e di fuga dall’identità abitudinaria, chi aveva dato vita a delle microperformance da proto-bodyartista, chi aveva esaltato la dimensione estetica e relazionale del viaggio o chi invece aveva praticato gli off-camera resi poi famosi da Man Ray e Moholy-Nagy.

Trovatasi in concorrenza spietata con la pittura da Salon, la fotografia ottocentesca intravede e sperimenta dunque complessi e affascinanti percorsi alternativi, fondando quel patrimonio linguistico che andrà poi a costituire la sua identità concettuale nel Novecento.
