Yang Fudong: Seven Intellectuals in a Bamboo Forest is the first U.S. museum presentation of the now seminal five-part video work by Shanghai-based artist Yang Fudong. In conjunction with the Yang Fudong exhibition, the exhibition Seven Sages of the Bamboo Grove explores the theme of this third-century group of Chinese learned men梤eferenced in the title of Yang抯 video梬ith an installation of traditional works. In the catalogue, as well as in the galleries, the traditional exhibition provides a deeper understanding and some cultural context for the contemporary work. The catalogue explores Yang Fudong抯 intent through a discussion of his work in an essay by Miwako Tezuka, Associate Curator, Asia Society. An interview with the artist conducted by Melissa Chiu, Museum Director and Vice President, Global Visual Art Programs, Asia Society, provides additional insights to his methods. The book expands the conceptual dialogue of the two exhibitions through texts on the subject of the traditional theme of the Seven Sages by Adriana Proser, John H. Foster Curator for Traditional Asian Art, Asia Society, and Daisy Yiyou Wang, Asia Society Museum Getty Fellow. A comprehensive plate section includes numerous stills from each of the five sections of the Yang抯 film.
