The Pilgrim's Progress (Part I 1678/Part II 1684) holds a unique place in the history of English literature. The pilgrim Christian, Mr Worldly Wiseman, Giant Despair, Hopeful, and Ignorance are engaged in a powerful drama set against a solidly realistic background of town and country. Bunyan captures the speech of ordinary people as accurately as he depicts their behaviour and appearance and as firmly as he realizes their inner emotional and spiritual life. The tale is related in language remarkable for its beauty and simplicity, and is spiced with Bunyan's acute and satirical perceptions of the vanity and hypocrisy of his own society.

著者简介

约翰·班扬，英国著名作家、布道家。出生于英格兰东部区域贝德福德郡的贝德福德。青年时期曾被征入革命的议会军，后在故乡从事传教活动。1660年斯图亚特王朝复辟，当局借口未经许可而传教，把他逮捕入狱两次，分别监禁十二年、六个月。
