Religious diversity, not pluralism, challenges citizens of the world today to learn from the differences between the religions rather than glibly assuming their commonality. Conversation, in its open questioning of and by its participants, is the more promising modus operandi in the engagement of religions than dialogue, because dialogue, consciously or unconsciously, often presupposes a likely outcome. Scholars of religion in fields other than philosophy of religion have contributions not yet sufficiently appreciated to make to the conversations between religious traditions. It is a prospect from which the capacity of humans to image alternatives for religion may contribute to understanding larger human possibilities.
