This collection of essays looks at missions, their complicity in European colonialism and their postcolonial aftermath. It examines the spread of Christianity and also, more uniquely, incidences of proselytizing in religions such as Islam, Hinduism and Buddhism. The collection is interdisciplinary, but has an anthropological bent - the essays focus on textual or material aspects of missions, with topics as diverse as attempts in the early 1800's to convert Jews in London because of their unique ability to stave off the End of Days, and how clocks introduced time-telling to Africa. This book is intended to be used as a teaching tool for courses in postcolonial/cultural and mission studies. The contributors are well-known and include top scholars such as Gauri Viswanathan and Klaus Klostermeier.
