Monika Chavez is Associate Professor of German at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where she is Supervisor of Second Year German. She received her Ph.D. at the University of Texas at Austin in 1992. Her research interests focus on sociolinguistic and variationist issues in foreign language learning and teaching. She currently serves as the Chair of the University of Wisconsin System German Placement Test Committee (UW Press) and is a member of the Editorial Board of German Langnet, a project sponsored by the National Foreign Language Center and the American Association of Teachers of German. She has published and presented on language processing, demographic learner and teacher variables, and student beliefs and preferences. She is also a co-author of a first year German textbook. At the University of Wisconsin-Madison, she teaches language courses at all levels, and graduate courses in applied linguistics and foreign language pedagogy.
