Enlisted as aide of Captain Alatriste in the Spanish regiments, Inigo de Balboa tries to survive in a world where he needs to get very close to his enemy in order to kill him with his sword. He witnesses a historical moment, the surrender of Breda, which he would retell later to his friend Velazquez for a famous painting.
