Herman M. Ward has created a new kind of
anthology, designed above all to develop genuine
love for poetry rather than to force the reader to
read what others believe he ought to like. The edi-
tor spent many hours with high school students to
determine what kind of poetry they really enjoy.
Each of the poems in this anthology was actually
voted on by them. Poems for Pleasure is a book for
young adults which accurately reflects their taste
in poetry.
The range of this collection is wide: i29 poems
by 72 English and American poets are included.
Among the poems are "The Raven" by Poe, "When
I Was One-and-Twenty" by Housman, "0 Captain!
My Captain !" by Whitman, "Renascence" by Mil-
lay, "Chicago" by Sandburg, "The Ballad of East
and West" by Kipling, and poems by Shakespeare,
Keats, Frost, Shelley, Byron, Nash, Cummings, and
many others,
