A Thousand Pardons is a book
overflowing with life: the life of the garden
that blooms and dies and is reborn with the
seasons, the lives of birds and insects and
cats and dogs, and above all. the lives of
people. With humor and deep perception,
Ms. Loeser writes about the sense of
mortality that derives from everyday life
and that comes upon us willy-nilly, in the
midst of the workaday world.
Katinka Loeser is a native Iowan who grew
up and went to school in Chicago. Her work
appeared in Poetry and won that
magazine s Young Poet s Prize in 1943.
One of the editors making the award was
Peter De Vries. to whom she s been
married ever since. Ms. Loeser s poems
and stories have appeared in The New
Yorker. Of the pieces in A Thousand
Pardons, two ("Company Manners" and
"Taking Care") were cited in The Best
American Short Stories 1981.
