A one-year-old reaches out for a marigold held in her

mother s hand, and a learning expcricnce is underway.

The child feels the smooth stem of the flower and sniffs

its pungent scent. Transfixed by the petals bold orange

color, the little onc hears her mother s familiar voice:

"Flower. See the pretty flower?" As the young mind gath-

ers these sensory messages, new connections are

formed, associations made and memories stored away.

Before many months have passed, the dividends of this

brief experience and others like it will be evident. The

child, seeing anothcr marigold, will turn to her mother

and say, "Flower! Pretty flower."

Indeed, to babies and young children, all the world s a

classroom and each day is filled with tiny but impor-

tant lessons. And most of these lessons are taught by the

child s first and most influential guides--her parents.

While it is true that a child s ability to master life s lessons

is determined to a great extent by the mental capaci-

ties she is born with (pages 34-~9), her environment and

the people who interact with her also exert powerful

influences on her learning ability.

can do as a parent to help your child develop her natural
