From Library Journal Citizen diplomacy is a growing phenomenon. In addition to the usual sightseeing and other tourist activities, travelers are taken on arranged tours into the homes, workplaces, and social environments of their local counterparts. The hope is that this will be a major first step in the thawing of relations between nations. This book is a narrative of a representative trip taken by a group of Americans at the beginning of glasnost. It is full of enthusiasm and sensible advice and has a useful appendix of "organizations working to bridge the barriers." There are now over 2000 Soviet-American friendship groups, and many of them provide such experiences. A timely purchase for most libraries.- Harold M. Otness, Southern Oregon State Coll.
