<p>This Manual fi)r Writer.~ q/Term Papers&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; Theses&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; and Dissertations<br />

is designed as a guide to suitable style in the typewritten presenta-<br />

tion of formal papers both in scientific and in nonscientific fields.<br />

While the ideas&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; the findings&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; and the conclusions put forth in the<br />

paper are of primary importance&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; their consideration by the reader<br />

depends in considerable measure upon an orderly presentation&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; well<br />

documented and free of mechanical flaws.<br />

The genesis of this &quot;thesis manual&quot; lies in a sentence of the<br />

June .1929 edition of the Handbook of the Graduate Schools of<br />

the University of Chicago&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; which read: &quot;Samples of paper and<br />

directions concerning the form of the dissertation may be ob-<br />

tained at the Dissertation Desk&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; in Harper Library.&quot; When in 1931<br />

the work of the Dissertation Desk was transferred to a disserta-<br />

tion secretary under the purview of the Dean of Students&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; the<br />

secretary inherited a one-page set of mimeographed instructions&iuml;&frac14;&OElig;<br />

the first paragraph stating&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; &quot;In form&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; the dissertation should follow<br />

the style of the University of Chicago Press as exhibited in its<br />

publications and set forth in A Manual of Style.&quot; Students and<br />

heir typists&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; therefore&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; were directed to that style manual for<br />

necessary detailed information concerning acceptable thesis form.<br />

But the Manual of Style&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; designed as a guide to typographers&iuml;&frac14;&OElig;<br />

editors&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; advertising writers&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; and others dealing with the printed<br />

~~ord&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; required some interpretation if it was to serve as a guide to a<br />

~erson who was to produce a typescript conforming to its dictates.<br />

fo supplement the Press Manual&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; the dissertation secretary fur-<br />

ished to students a two-page set of mimeographed instructions on<br />

uch matters as spacing&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; indention&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; margins&iuml;&frac14;&OElig; undedining. With<br />

he flattening of student pocketbooks in the depression of 1930-35&iuml;&frac14;&OElig;<br />

here appeared to be a need to expand those instructions into a small<br />

ooklet which would incorporate the materlaIs in // Manual of<br />
