Willis Barnstone has supplied a great deal besides a good translation: his introduction, notes, short biography of Mao and history of the revolution, and notes on Chinese versification all combine to enrich the Western reader's understanding of Mao's poems. Barnstone's own book of poems, From This White Island, was nominated for a Pulitzer prize. His poems received the Cecil Hemley Memorial Award from the Poetry Society of America. As a scholar and editor, he has published a number of books on ancient and modern poetry, including many important translations. Mr. Barnstone is a graduate of Bowdoin, Columbia, Yale and the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London. He is currently Professor of Comparative Literature at Indiana University.
Ko Ching-Po, who collaborated with Barnstone on the translations, is Professor of Comparative Literature at Indiana University. He was born in Mainland China and is a graduate of Williams College and Wesleyan University.
