One of the rules in our Seattle home is that my family

never throws away books. Magazines and ne)vspapers [after

I ve clipped the articles that interest me) will wind up in

the wastebasket--but never books, because parting with

them seems too much like losing an old friend or casting

aside an experience we might someday want to enter again.

From the time I was able to hold one in my hands--pic-

ture books or comic books, with the covers winged open

upon my knees books always struck me as being one of

this world s special experiences. Today we have video

games, VCRs, and more than fifty channels to choose from

on television. But coming as I did from a pious Illinois

church family, I imagine that back in the 1950s some of the

respect that my elders had for the Bible [the book~ rubbed

off on any volume that fell into my hands. No, it didn t

matter what the book was about. For me, holding its hefti-

ness in my hands, underlining certain parts, and arguing

with the author in the margins (yes, I still do that} meant

that I possessed the key to knowledge, to realms of the

imagination I could find nowhere else. And remember: dur-

ing slavery days some states in America made it illegal for

black boys and girls to read. With that in mind, the pages

beneath my fingers felt like power or contraband. The very

act of reading itself was subversive and liberating. Whatever

the book s subject, 1 always knew that as I turned the pages

1 had that rarest of human privileges: a front-row seat as the

best thinkers and storytellers of all ages and cultures pre-

sented me--me! with their most carefully crafted

thoughts and feelings.

~ Of course, not throwing away books can lead to prob-

lems. Like, where do we put them? Four rooms in our

house, just remodeled to hold even more books, have ceil-
