Streams in the Desert

I will never forget, as a boy growing up, a very precious and

familiar sight. Every morning waiting for me at the breakfast

table was my angel mother with two books--her Bible and

Streams in the Desert. We read from the Bible, and then from

this classic daily devotional, a word that gave wisdom and coun-

sel for the new day.

This amazing volume was first published in 1925 by L.B.

Cowman, who was an American missionary to the Orient with

her husband, Charles. It is a compilation of her favorite writings

from some of the best known Christians over the last several

centuries, inc]uding Charles Spurgeon, F. B. Meyer, Andrew

Murray, and A. B. Simpson, just to name a few. It has been and

continues to be a source of great inspirational blessing to mil-

lions of believers.

For my mother it was also somewhat of a family diary. The birth

dates of all the children, grandchildren, and other relatives are

recorded as well as the dates of death. Even highlights of intportant

dates in history are recorded, like the day Nell Armstrong became

the first man to walk on the moon. This historic volume was one

of the few things left to me by my mother, and I will treasure it the

rest of my life and will pass it on to my children.

Through the years the English language and syntax have

changed, therefore, a revision was needed. To my delight, 1

learned that James Reimann had diligently giveLt himself to the

task. He has done a commendable job of updating the many

writings, but carefully preserving the original beauty and time-

less truths of the devotional. Even the scripture readings have

been updated using the New International Version.
