Anger and fear are the central emotional
components of an emergency mechanism
"built into" each human animal that
helped us survive before civilization.
Anger set the body s machinery in motion
for a frontal assault on the enemy. As we
have grown civilized, our biologically pro-
grammed anger mechanism has become
obsolete. Nevertheless, it persists. One
has only to walk the streets of our cities to
see anger. The short fuse has become a
way of life.
