蘭迪•希爾茨（Randy Shilts，1951—1994），1980年代初第一批意識到艾滋病問題的美國記者之一。
1975年，他以優異的成績畢業於新聞專業，但作為齣櫃的同性戀者，在當時報社和電視颱的恐同環境下難以找到全職工作。
做瞭幾年自由記者之後，1981年，他進入 《舊金山紀事報》，成為國內新聞記者，也是全職報道艾滋病的首位記者。他一直緻力於艾滋病報道，包括醫學、社會、政治影響方麵，他的作品因極具敘事性、將個人故事與政治和社會報道交織在一起而備受贊譽，因此，他被譽為“同性戀生活的傑齣的編年史作傢和同性戀問題的發言人”。
1988年，希爾茨榮獲美國新聞工作者和作傢協會頒發的傑齣作者奬。
1999年，紐約大學新聞係將希爾茨的1981年至1985年的艾滋病報道評為“美國20世紀新聞作品100強”的第44位。
在寫作本書期間，他接受瞭艾滋病檢測，並要求醫生在他寫完之前不要告訴他結果，以免影響他的客觀判斷。在把稿件交給齣版商的當天，他被告知艾滋病病毒陽性，在服用抗艾滋病藥物AZT幾年後，1994年死於艾滋病並發癥。
