In the essays collected in the book, Barenboim is making an effort to dissolve life in music, rather than the other (easier-to-capture) way round. Thoughtfully and gracefully written, readers without basic music training may nonetheless find some passages technically hard to follow. Barenboim is one of the musicians I got familiar with at an early age, thanks to his recording of Mendelssohn's Lieder ohne Worte which I have owned for more than ten years. His late ex-wife Jacqueline Mary du Pré is also one my of personal favorites. The book was bought at Harvard Bookstore in Cambridge in the summer of 2009 and read in the fall of the same year.
