隻讀瞭第5章，內容非常有啓發性。17世紀時流行一種對奇珍異寶、古今之物的收藏熱情。被收藏之物最大的特點是其稀奇性，無論是天然的還是人造的。收藏方式上在當時並非分門彆類，規規整整，而是把各種八竿子打不著的奇珍異寶十分密集地放在一個相對狹小的空間（有很多是個人收藏傢）中以供展齣，這種方式本身就是為瞭進一步刺激觀眾的好奇。同時藏品的發現者和收集者也可能會為某些藏品記錄發生在其上的神奇故事，而觀賞展齣者也往往需要非常詳細地以文字記述所見所感，這與16世紀不同。最後這些收藏和展齣都蘊含有宗教意味，這些展品（比如動物和植物的標本）會讓人感覺它們來自伊甸園，因而是對創世起源之時的某種保存。
